I watched my first adult movie when I was 17 at a local blue movie cinema, so, technically, I was breaking the law. At the time you were not allowed to buy actual tickets for hardcore flicks, you had to purchase an overpriced box of candy and got the ticket as a "free" bonus. Anyway - I manned up, told the cashier that I was 18, and she said: "Well, you do look like 18." - Actually, I didn't. I looked like a 16 year old mama's boy. But she let me in, and that was that. ;)

The tickets weren't exactly cheap: Roundabout the same amount you pay for a mainstream movie ticket in 2022, but in mid-1980s money. Well, you got a candy box on top. ;)

For the next few months I kept sneaking around that adult cinema after school, waiting for every chance I got with that cashier I already knew. Just so I wouldn't have to show my ID. The others wouldn't let me in without one. She was a tough old bird, but very kind and understanding.

Over the next few months I watched every one of the films on offer, one every week (or the same one twice if its run was extended to two weeks and I liked it). There was another adult cinema just across the street, but I had no luck with their cashiers.

Eventually, I did turn 18. Next time I met my favorite cashier, she didn't say anything but gave me a wan, knowing smile. Also, with the other cinema now being accessible to me, I could choose between two different films a week. They never ran the same films - one was focused primarily on American porn, the other on European flicks. More often than not, I chose both. ;) So that's where my pocket money went.....

This phase lasted about 1.5 years, after which my parents finally purchased a VCR. I bought myself a second one so I could copy my favourite flicks "for posterity". Eventually, my collection grew to over a thousand tapes, with 2 or 3 movies per tape. Almost all of them ended up in the municipal waste combustor years after I'd moved out. To this day I'm sad that I didn't take them with me.

One or two years after I had stopped frequenting them, both blue movie theatres in my town closed for good. VHS killed them. It wasn't me! ;)

My icons back then were Tracey Adams, the other Tracy(i) who cannot be mentioned, Taija Rae, Sheri St. Claire, the gorgeous "Angel" (née Jennifer James), Ginger Lynn - arguably the most naturally beautiful woman in the history of porn - Buffy Davis, Marilyn Jess, Amber Lynn, Renee Summers, Tish Ambrose, buxom beauty Rachel Ashley, and Veronica Hart, the thinking man's porn star.

Annette Haven, beautiful as she was, never did anything for me. She seemed just too distant, too highbrow - forever out of reach. Of course, in real life they all were. Unlike today, where you can book pretty much any adult star for a private session if you have the money. Back then, they were adult movie performers, not whores. Sorry, they're called "escorts" now. As if there were a difference. That's why they call the good old days the good old days. ;)

Back in the day there was no Internet, and there were no BDs, not even DVDs. Only cinemas, and a while later, VHS tapes. Adult films were shot on 35mm, they had plots (mostly), and recognizable stars. I.e. until the latter half of the 1980s, when videotape recording in professional adult films became the norm and everything went to the pooper.

If I had to name a favourite film, it would probably be "Sex Drive" (1985) by the late Chuck Vincent. I've not been able to secure a truly great-quality rip of that one though. His films were always above average.
